On 21 October 2026, the international workshop “Strengthening U.S.–Central European Research Collaboration with an Emphasis on Defense-Related Research” took place in Poznań. Organised by the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA), the Polish Chamber of Commerce for High Technology (IZTECH) and Poznań University of Technology, the workshop brought together professionals involved in international research cooperation. Experts from the Center for Research Programmes of the EU (CPB UE) at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences (IPPT PAN), participated in the training to further develop their expertise in managing internationally funded research projects.

The workshop focused on strengthening research collaboration between the United States and Central Europe, with particular emphasis on projects funded by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

Participants gained insights into the U.S. research funding system, available funding opportunities and strategies for establishing international partnerships. Key topics included research security, regulatory compliance, financial management, contracting and subcontracting procedures, as well as the practical requirements of working with U.S. funding agencies.

The sessions were led by experienced NCURA experts: Shannon Sutton, Ara Tahmassian, Eva Björndal and John Hanold, representing leading research institutions in the United States and Europe. The workshop also provided an opportunity to explore European experiences with U.S. research funding and exchange best practices in international project management.

Participation in the workshop enabled the CPB UE IPPT PAN team to strengthen its expertise in international research management, gain a deeper understanding of U.S. funding requirements and explore opportunities for transatlantic research cooperation.

The knowledge and insights gained will support CPB UE’s ongoing activities in facilitating international research collaboration and the effective management of research projects.
